We are seeking a dynamic and experienced underwriting leader to join their ambitious team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their commercial insurance business.
The Role
Reporting to senior management, the Head of Business Underwriting Lead is a strategic leadership position responsible for the growth, profitability, and strategic direction of the commercial lines portfolio.
This is a hybrid role that combines deep technical underwriting expertise with exceptional business development and team leadership. You will be responsible for driving gross written premium (GWP) and underwriting profit, leading a team of underwriters, and managing key relationships with direct corporate clients and broker partners. This role is pivotal in balancing growth ambitions with long-term portfolio sustainability during a period of exciting transformation.
Key Responsibilities
... Strategic Leadership & P&L Management
Develop and execute the business strategy for the commercial underwriting division, aligning with the company's overall transformation goals and growth targets.
Hold full P&L responsibility for the commercial lines portfolio, managing the GWP and underwriting profit budget.
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of underwriters, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and client-centricity.
Technical Underwriting & Portfolio Governance
Oversee all underwriting governance, ensuring the development and implementation of robust underwriting guidelines, policies, and authorities.
Act as the senior technical referral point for the team, evaluating, underwriting, and quoting complex, high-value risks across all commercial classes (e.g., Property, Casualty, Engineering, Marine).
Proactively manage the portfolio, monitoring performance, and implementing pricing and product strategies to ensure sustainable profitability.
Business Development & Relationship Management
Drive client-centric business development, personally managing and building relationships with key direct corporate clients and major broker channels.
Work with business development teams to build pipelines on new business opportunities and to maintain high renewal retention.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Actuarial, Claims, Risk Engineering) to develop innovative, market-leading insurance solutions for clients.
Qualifications & Experience
Experience: A minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in general insurance underwriting, with a strong focus on commercial lines.
Leadership: Proven experience (5+ years) in a leadership or team management capacity is essential.
Technical Skills: Deep technical expertise across complex commercial lines (Property, Casualty, Engineering, Marine).
Business Acumen: A proven track record of managing a P&L, driving GWP growth, and maintaining underwriting profitability.
Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related discipline. Professional insurance qualifications (e.g., ACII, ANZIIF, or Certificate in General Insurance) are highly desirable.
